Impatiens are a popular flower for their ability to flourish in partial or full shade. They are grown from seed and can be a little difficult to germinate. Impatiens are particular as far as temperature goes for seed germination. Seed is easiest started indoors where a warm environment can be provided. If started in the garden the soil temperature should be 65 degrees or warmer.
Impatiens prefer a fertile, moist soil that drains well. Although they like moist soil, it should not be wet or soggy. Impatiens are slow to grow initially but when established will grow quickly. Cuttings may be taken after the plants are well established. They are very attractive in baskets or hanging containers.
Impatiens should be watered regularly and fertilized with a general purpose fertilizer once a month. They will grow to a height of about 18 inches and should be spaced about 18 inches apart to allow for lateral expansion.
Impatiens are not usually plagued with many insect or disease problems. Aphids can be a problem but you can eliminate them with periodic use of insecticidal soap.
In summary, Impatiens are easy to grow once you coax them into germinating. They will make a beautiful splash of color for that shady spot in your garden.
